AWAS orders B757-200 carbon brake retrofit

AWAS, one of the world's leading aircraft leasing firms, has become the latest company to order Dunlop Aerospace Braking Systems' carbon brakes as a retrofit for Boeing 757-200 aircraft.

The order involves the Meggitt group company supplying wheels, brakes and hardware to AWAS. Dunlop Aerospace Braking Systems' carbon brakes are 750Ibs lighter than the steel brakes that were originally fitted to the aircraft, and they offer Boeing 757 operators a typical payback within just five years. Many Boeing 757s are expected to remain in service for another 20 to 40 years.

"With the reduced weight, operators benefit from less fuel burn and increased range - and this is especially important given the escalated fuel costs that have been a major issue for airlines over recent years," explained Ben van Sleeuwen, head of aftermarket business development, Dunlop Aerospace Braking Systems.

"The performance is also improved, with life on the wing doubled compared to steel brakes. This means less maintenance - resulting in less labour time and savings from not needing to stock as many spares."
